Have you ever visited South Carolina? Many people travel there every year to visit Myrtle Beach.

Well, I actually grew up there. From second through tenth grade I actually lived in a small town right outside of Myrtle Beach. It was there I learned that some states actually have their trademark food.

So much to my delighted surprise, one of South Carolina’s traditional dishes is something called chicken bog.

Though my family left that area while I was in high school, I’ve carried this meal with me everywhere since.

Now, I feed my family this traditional dish. It is filling yet inexpensive. It doesn’t take much time to create it either.

So I’m going to share this recipe with you. Hopefully, you and your family will enjoy it as much as we have over the years.

Delicious Chicken Bog

Here is how you make chicken bog:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of chicken breast
  • 2 pounds of polish sausage
  • 2 cups of white or brown rice

As you can tell, this recipe doesn’t require many ingredients, and most are inexpensive too. So if you are working on a budget, this is a great one-pot meal.

1. Prepare Your Rice

When you begin this recipe, I always recommend making the rice first. The reason is that white rice doesn’t take as long to make.

But I actually prefer to use brown rice in the recipe. It is a sturdier rice, and it makes the meal healthier as well. If you have someone in your family that has health conditions such as diabetes, then you’d probably want to opt for the brown rice because it takes longer for the body to break it down.

Anyway, for a family of 4, I recommend using 2 cups of rice. You’ll want to place 4 cups of water in a pot.

Then you add 2 cups of rice. Keep in mind, the rule of thumb for rice is that you add twice the amount of water as you do rice.

Next, you’ll want to toss a drop or two of oil into the rice as well to keep it from sticking.

Now, the main thing to remember with rice is this: place the lid on the pot, set the stove on high until it reaches a boil, then turn it down to low.

But DO NOT open the lid. This will make your rice have a weird consistency. You just leave the lid on the pot until it is done. You will begin timing your rice after it has reached a boil.

So when you turn the stove down to low, set your timer at the same time. If you make white rice, it’ll take 20 minutes until it is finished.

However, if you make brown rice, it will take 45 minutes. This is why I recommend making the rice first. When the rice is done, take the lid off of the pot and use a fork to fluff up the rice. You can add some butter to the rice at this point as well if you so desire.

2. Boil the Chicken

Now that you have your rice going, you’ll want to start your chicken. This is pretty simple as you just need to put the chicken in a pot with a lid. I love this recipe because it allows me to utilize items I raise around my home.

So if you know that you will be butchering chickens anytime soon and would like to have a go-to recipe to use them up, then you’ll want to save this recipe.

After your chicken is in the pot, you’ll add water to the pot until the chicken is covered.

Next, place the lid on the pot and turn the stove to high until the chicken is boiling. Once it is boiling, you’ll want to turn the temperature down to medium and crack the lid so the pot doesn’t boil over.

Now, when the chicken is pull-apart tender, you’ll know that it is done. If you are concerned that your chicken isn’t done, feel free to use a meat thermometer.

So once you know that the chicken is done, turn the stove off and remove the chicken from the water. You’ll want to place it on a plate and use two forks to pull the meat apart to where it is shredded.

Once you have the chicken shredded just leave it on the plate until you complete the next step.

3. Fry the Sausage

You are moving right along in this process. You have started your rice, boiled your chicken, and shredded it.

So now you’ll need to pull your polish sausage out of the packaging.

Again, if you are someone that likes to DIY everything that you can, you can actually make your own polish sausage with this recipe.

But regardless of how you get your polish sausage, you’ll need to cut it up into about one-inch pieces. I usually just cut mine into little rounds.

Then I’ll add some oil to my cast iron pan. Once that has warmed up, I’ll toss the sausage into the pan. I often add an onion in the process as well just because I think it adds some nice flavor to the recipe.

But that is totally up to you.

Once you see that the sausage is brown, you are ready to move on to the next step.

4. Combine

At this point, your sausage should be browned, your rice should be cooked, and your chicken should be cooked and shredded.

Now, if you have completed all of these steps successfully, then you are ready to add your chicken to the pan with your sausage.

Then you’ll add the rice to the mix as well. After this, you’ll stir the mixture until it is heated and mixed through.

Once you’ve reached this point, you can add salt and pepper to taste. Then the dish is ready to eat, but check out the next step if you are looking for a few ways to dress this recipe up.

5. Add-in Options

So as you can tell, chicken bog is a pretty straightforward recipe. It is easy to make, pretty filling, a one-pot dish, and can be adjusted to feed a crowd or a small family.

Plus, it can be a budget-friendly meal if you raise your own food because potentially you’d only have to purchase the rice to make it if you raise pigs and chickens.

But you could be someone like my mother. I would get so excited when I’d go to a friend’s house and we’d have chicken bog. I also loved it when we had it at school.

Then when I’d go home, I’d ask my mom to cook it, and she’d always kind of scrunch up her nose because she thought it was a little ‘Plain Jane.’

So she started trying to dress it up a little bit.

Then after I was married and had moved back south, I met someone else from South Carolina and they told me of ways people in their area dressed up the recipe.

So whether you just like some added flavor or you are thinking this recipe is a little too straightforward, here are some ideas for you.

First, you can always cook the rice in stock. I cook my rice in chicken stock or corn stock and it adds quite a bit of flavor to the recipe.

Second, my mom actually made chicken rice when she made chicken bog. It added some color to the recipe and flavor too. Which made it both more visibly appealing and appetizing to her as well.

But if you are unfamiliar with chicken rice, you can either buy it prepackaged, or you can add cream of chicken soup to rice once it has been prepared. You can add onion powder and other spices as wellif you like.

Third, add vegetables to the chicken bog. It is common in a lot of places to add peppers and onions to the mix. It adds color, flavor, and makes the dish a little healthier.

Fourth, we like spice around our house, so I have been known to add some tomatoes and jalapenos to the mix to spice things up. My husband and middle son always put hot sauce on their chicken bog regardless.

Fifth, add some cheese to the bog. You could add a mix of shredded cheese and make it a little more savory. My sister loves cheese so she would be a big fan of this idea.

Finally, you could turn your bog into a gumbo by adding other meats. Shrimp would be a great way to add some additional flavor and protein to your meal.

So as you can tell, there are lots of different ways to add flavors you would love to make your own version of a chicken bog.

Well, this is how I go about making chicken bog. It is a super simple recipe that I turn to a lot when we need a fast dinner.

However, this recipe is a great one to have if you are having a gathering at your home around thefire pit during the summer or fall. It is inexpensive and easy to adjust to the size of a crowd that you are having.

Plus, it is warming and quite comforting actually.

But now I’d like to hear from you. Have you ever heard of chicken bog? If so, how was it prepared? Do you have any other ideas to add flavors to the dish?

Also, I’m curious, what dish is famous for the area you live in? It is always interesting to hear what dishes are famous, where, and why.
